Notarized copy of remembrances of Miss Hattie E. Williams, July 25, 1954, Jefferson Co., AL: "Joseph Williams, the Immigrant, was born in Wales, an orphan, his father died when he was quite young and he was bound out to a man by the name of Paul as a boy and he was treated so cruelly that when he was twelve years of age a friend by the name of Mewbourne told him that he was old enough to choose his own guardian. Mr. Mewbourne went with him before the magistrate and assisted in arranging the papers releasing him from Mr. Paul. Joseph Williams then chose Mr. Mewbourne as his guardian. Later they settled in eastern North Carolina. Joseph lived with his kind friend, Mr. Mewbourne, until he was twenty-one years of age and then married his daughter, Mary Mewbourne. Later parts of the Mewbourne and Williams families moved to Edgecombe and Dobbs Counties, North Carolina. Joseph and Mary were the parents of a number of children, two of which were William Williams and Joseph Williams, Jr. There were other children belonging to this family, and these related families also had sons named "Mewbourne". We have never known any other Williams family who carried the name "Mewbourne" other than members of this Williams family." The will of Joseph Williams, Sr. was found on file in Duplin Co., NC (now Sampson Co.,NC) It is supposedly in his own handwriting but is so worn and faded that it is unreadable.
The Heritage of Sampson County, North Carolina (1983) "Seven Mile Primitive Baptist, 1760" pp. 79-80 "The roots that gave rise to the origin of the Seven Mile Primitive Baptist Church, located today along SR 1703 in Westbrook Township, date back to 1690 in Wales, England when Elder Joseph Williams, Sr., a Baptist minister, came to America and settled in the Albermarle region of North Carolina in what is known today as Bertie County. He married Mary Mewboorn, the only daughter of Thomas Mewboorn, an Englishman, and his wife Eleanor. Thomas and Eleanor are the forebearers of the entire Mewborn lineage in the U. S. today. Joseph and Mary were married after coming to this country, but records state the Mewboorns and the Williams came over on the same boat. Coming about the same time was another Welsh family, brothers Charles Jones, Sr., and Joel Jones, who had kept close ties with the Williams family back in Wales. This Jones family was noted for strong religious character, traits and practices in Wales for centuries prior to the family's coming to America. According to records, Charles Jones, Sr., and Joel Jones left Bertie County and came to New Hanover (now Sampson) in 1744, where they had acquired land grants between Seven Mile and Big Coharie Swamps. Here, they cleared the land and built homes. Many of their direct descendants still live today on this same soil. Elder Joseph Williams, Sr. and wife Mary with their children accompanied the Jones family from Bertie County about the same time and acquired a land grant in the Goshen community | Williams, Rev Joseph Sr. (I1770)

On April 26, 1703 in Liverpool England John Poston age 17 signed a document that made him an indentured servant to Henry Brown for 5 years. He was to go to America to work the plantations. John was from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England and he probably landed at Leonardstown in St. Mary's County, Maryland. This was a common way for someone to get passage to America. Once free of his contract he probably lived for several years in St. Mary's County. Judging from the ages of his sons he should have married no later than 1712. John, like many others, came to make a new life on his own. He did manage but it most likely came hard and slow. It wasn't until the late 20's (1720's) that he began to come into his own. At about the age of 40 he seemed to have saved enough to become a landowner. Two plantations owned by Thomas Overton reverted to the colony when he died intestate leaving no heirs. On February 2, 1727 John Poston had a survey made in order to apply for a patent of Poverty plantation which covered 247 acres. Later in August he and Edward Davis did the same for the Goodwill plantation which was 100 acres. It appears that Davis was granted the entire 100 acres for on October 4, 1729 he sold half the plantation to John Poston for "three pound sterling money of England". This was a nominal sum to pass the title. In religion John was probably a very devout Episcopalian. In the Northeastern corner of St Mary's County was King and Queen parish whose principal church, Trinity Church, stood on the north side of Patuxent Creek. John and other members of his family were known to have been friendly to that church. Poverty and Goodwill was located in Charles County but not many miles from Trinty Church. John Poston made his will on December 12, 1739. It was entered for probate May 24 1744. When the inventory was filed in June, 1744 Francis signed it and Thomas made his mark. John Jr. was not mentioned in the inventory. | Poston, John (I1087)

In May, 1864, James Lee was captured at the Battle of Bloody Angle in Spotsylavnia Courthouse, Virginia, and transferred to the notorious Elmira, New York prisoner of war camp. In June of that year he wrote to his wife, Mary Ann, advising her of his capture, as well of his illness. On October 4, 1864, James Lee died of dysentery at Elmira. Patrick witnessed a Deed of Gift in King George County VA February 4, 1725. (Deed Book 1, p.330). He was indentured in King George County VA January 6, 1726 (Deed Book 1, pp.411-413. He and his wife Margaret were indentured for the farm where they lived in King George County (Deed book 1-A pp.304-305).
He obtained a 118 acre land grant from Thomas Lord Fairfax in Prince William County December 10, 1740. He had applied for this grant January 10, 1739 as heir of Roger Day. In a September 3, 1739 entry in King George County Deed Book 2, p.300, Patrick and Roger Day are identified as shipmates and cousins. It is not clear where Patrick and Roger Day were shipmates. They may have traveled together from Europe or they may have been part of the crew on any of several ships sailing out of VA in that time.
Patrick is enlisted in the 1741 Poll of Burgesses of Prince William County, indicating that he was a land owner and more than 21 years of age. In a 1747 poll of residents of Western Dettingham Parish in Prince William County VA, Patrick Sr., Benjamin, Patrick Jr. Robert and James Hamrick are living side by side.
