Lawson took part in a desperate attack on March 25, 1865 in an attempt to break the seige of Petersburg. The Yankee who took Bridges' gun said, ' You've been using it; it is pretty hot." Bridges replied 'Yes, I got it from you and have made the best use of it I could. at the age of sixteen, was a journalist and frequent local officeholder. During the Civil
War he was a captain in the Sixteenth North Carolina Regiment. Wounds suffered at Fredericksburg
forced Erwin to withdraw from active service for several months, but he became
major of the junior reserves and organized Erwin's Brigade late in the war. He was mayor
of Rutherfordton (1866-1867) and register of deeds (1878-1882 and 1886-1890). In 1872 he

Marriage to Susannah was performed by W. M. Gold, Justice of the Peace.
Simon enlisted with younger brother Hamby in Company B, 34th North Carolina Regiment. Simon enlisted on Sept. 2, 1861 as a 4th Corporal. Wounded at Frazier's Farm on June 30, 1862. Simon lost his left leg just above the knee in the artillery fire when Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville.
The 34th Regiment, NC Infantry, was part of the Army of Northern Virginia under the command of General Robert E. Lee. The Regiment was in the Stonewall Jackson Corps., Hill's Division (Major General A.P. Hill), Sixth Brigade (Brigadier General W. D. Pender and later Brig. Gen. A. M. Scales).
Simon and Hamby enlisted with the "Sandy Run Yellow Jackets" which made up the 34th Regiment.
The 34th Regiment as part of A. P. Hill's Corps was part of one of the more brilliant military moves in the history of war at Chancellorsville. At a virtual draw with Federal troops, Stonewall Jackson engineered an attacked on the exposed western flank of the Federal lines. The surprise was so complete the battle lines were completely obscured. The attack took so long to arrange that only about two hours of daylight was left from the beginning of the attack, but since it was a full moon and clear night Jackson continued the assault until around 9:00 PM. To get a look at the retreating Federal forces Stonewall rode to a ridge just forward of the Confederate lines. While returning to the Confederate lines Stonewall ran into some of his troops riding the lines and as a group they approached the newly established Confederate lines. The large group now approaching the Confederate line was mistaken for an advancing Federal counterattack and was fired on killing most of the group and mortally wounding Stonewall Jackson. The group that fired on Stonewall was a NC Regiment out of A. P. Hills Corps, two volleys were fired on Jackson, the second is known to have come from Lane's Brigade and the first has not been identified and very possibly was the 34th Regiment. As a result of the commotion Federal opened artillery fire and in that barrage Simon broke his leg which was later amputated above the knee. This probably was the end of Simon's association with the 34th but his brother Hamby continued on participating in Gettysburg and was probably part of Pickett's Charge and was then captured at Hanover Junction.
