    Notes:

    Later in John Jr.'s life, the family story goes that Peter Claywell gave them the land which was his RW land grant, in what is now Williamsport, TN. At the time the NC state line was a bit west of there. I have not been able to find the original Land Grant and family lore sometimes says it was Peter Claywell's RW land grant and others say it was John King's RW land grant. Peter did fight a battle in the RW, John (Sr.) did not.

    Notes:

    John Poston was born in Rutherford Co., now Cleveland Co.. He grew up at the old Poston home on Highway 226 near Shelby. As executor of his father's estate he assisted his mother with business relating to the settlement. John made purchases of adjoining land, increasing the acreage he had inherited from his father. Personal records show that he was a meticulous bookeeper, leaving records of guardian accounts, personal business, tax and other receipts. He was a businessman who often made trips to Columbia, S.C. and return with sugar, salt, molasses and cloth to fill his neighbors written requests . After his death, his widow, with the help of her children, managed the farm and even attended to business matters dealing with the Union Army occupation officers.

    A Letter of proposal of marriage was sent to Miss Mary Poston, Rutherfordton County, Brushy Creek Post Office, in 1837. It was from W.M. Edelins or Eldins who says he is living in Lincolnton. He inquired about Mary's mother's health and stated that his own was not so good. Mary married James L. Green.
