1. | Henry Moss was born about 1736 in Loudon, VA; died in 1812 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Other Events:

Henry enlisted in the Revolutionary War Jan. 13, 1777, at the age of 41, he was a 2nd Lieutenant and received a pay of $27.00 a month. He was in the 2nd Virginia Regiment, under Captain William Taylor, commanded by Colonel Christian Febiger. He was at White Plains, New York on Dec. 15, 1778 with the 1st Virginia Brigade, commanded by Brig. Gen. Woodford. He appeared on list "Arrangements of VA Battalion, White Plains, Aug. 1778, as Number 2 Ensign." On May 14, 1780 he was taken prisoner by the British at Charleston, VA., and exchanged in April 1781. Henry was given a new commission with the rank of Captain on May 26, 1781. In 1782, he is the commander of "Company of Second Virginia Regulars," in 1783. He is now a Captain in 3rd Company, Virginia Detachment, commanded by Major Samuel. Finialy, he remained in the Continental Army service until the end of the Revolutionary War, and retired on Jan. 1, 1783.
Henry Moss received 300 acres of land for his service in the war by warrant #1504 issued May 29, 1783. On May 2, 1783, he received 4,000 acres for his three years of service as a Captain, Warrant #614, dated 5-2-1783. All of these warrants of land made Henry a very rich man, but he was already rich before the Revolutionary War started.

Henry Moss deeded 70 acres to Howell Moss, of Lincoln County, N.C. - Register of Deeds, Book 3, page 122-26, Dec. 1785;
Samuel Hollingsworth paid to Henry Moss for 15 pounds, for 50 acres on both sides of Mt. Creek - to Henry Moss's old line and to John Snyder's Corner, book "The Moss Family" by Paul Moss, Odessa, Texas, page 9-12, 1795;
Rutherford County Census; Marriage Records, Rutherford Co., N.C. *1800 Census and 1810 Rutherford County Census, settled not later than 1785;
Deed Book J-L, page 215; 23 Sept. 1785. Recorded 19 July 1794 Joel Vaughn of Rutherford County deeds to Henry Moss of same county for 40 pounds, 200 acres on both sides of Broad River, original grant to Vaughn Sept. 1775. This should prove that Henry Moss lived in these areas at the times indicated.
Military Service:

Crestus Howell Moss was a farmer and owned slaves, he was born in Loudoun County, VA. He came from Virginia to North Carolina with his parents before 1805. He later moved from Rutherford County, N.C. to Haywood County, N.C. about 1806/07, and then from Haywood County, N.C. to Macon County, N.C. about 1829 and from Macon County, N.C. to Tusquitee Valley, Clay County, North Carolina about 1835 where he lived on the Old Suttermire Place near his son Howell until he died in 1845. He is buried at the Moss Cemetery in the Tusquitee Valley, Clay County, N. C., at the Moss Baptist Church.

From P. Cleveland Gardner's notes: He bought a farm just South of his father's homestead upon which he and his wife settled and reared a large family. Some years later he erected a large two story house just West of where he first settled, which residence is occupied by his son and known as the Wellmon Homestead. His father died will still in the prime of life and left a large family, and he administered upon the estate of his father and purchased the interest of the several heirs and took care of his mother who lived to of old age. He is buried in the family plot with his father.
Military Service:
William served in the military in 56th Regiment NC Infantry CO F The 56th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in July 1862, at Camp Magnum, near Raleigh, NC. Its members were recruited in the counties of Camden, Cumberland, Pasquotank, Northampton, Orange, Cleveland, Alexander, Rutherford, and Mechlenburg. It fought at Gum Swamp, Plymouth, and Drewry"s Bluff, endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches south of the James River, and saw action around Appomattox. The regiment had 149 men captured at Gum Swamp, lost 4 killed and 84 wounded at Plymouth, and reported 90 causualties at Ware Bottom Church. Many were disabled at Sayler's Creek, and only 9 Officers and 62 men surrendered with the army of Northern Virginia.

From P. Cleveland Gardner Notes: They bought land and settled on the farm later known as the Jeff Spurling homestead situated a few hundred yards West of the Shelby-Morganton Road. They later sold this farm and bought and moved on a farm known as the Chapel Hendrick homestead situated just Northwest of the town of Shelby. Just recently (1926) the city of Shellby purchased a part of this farm and erected it's water plant there.

From P. Cleveland Gardner's notes: He resided on the place now known as the Frank Gold place some two miles West of Zion Baptist Church. After his marriage he sold his interest in his father's estate to his brother William Riley Wellmon, and settled at or near Bloomfield, Missouri where he reared a family. The date of his departure is not known but it was probably was between 1835 to 1840. He corresponded with his family for a number of years but now little is known of him. It is said that he had a son named Evans and that both were shot and killed in an affray while attending an election there.

From P. Cleveland Gardner's notes: Creaton sold his interest in his father's estate to his brother William Riley Wellmon and settled in Little Rock, Arkansas while still single. He left this state sometime after his brother Crayton. Little is known of him except that for a brief correspondencr with his family. It is said that he married there and had a daughter named Vell. He was a soldier and died at Little Rock, Arkansas during the Civil War. It is not known as yet wheather he served in the Federal or Confederate Army or whether he died of injury received in battle or other meand.
