    Thomas Beam Gardner, 76, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, NC.
    Tommy was born on September 20, 1933 in Shelby, NC, the son of Annie Tazwell Lloyd Gardner and Paris Cleveland Gardner. He moved to Chapel Hill at the age of seven and graduated from Chapel Hill High School. Following high school he attended UNC-Chapel Hill where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. After completing his junior year at Carolina, he left to serve his country in the Korean War as a soldier in the United States Army. After fulfilling his service obligation, Tommy operated the Quik Food Mart and Phillips 66 gas station in downtown Chapel Hill. He was also co-owner of Huggins Hardware. He later received his broker's license and became owner of Insurance and Business Associates in Chapel Hill.
    Tommy was very active in civic and political affairs in Chapel Hill serving two terms on the Chapel Hill Town Council. He was a founding member and officer of TaxWatch, founding member of the Downtown Chapel Hill Association, a member of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce and Chapel Hill-Carrboro Merchants Association. He was also active in the N.C. Jaycees at the local and state levels as a charter member of the Chapel Hill Jaycees and also serving as state vice president. Tommy was also a member of the Rooster Club (retired Jaycees), American Legion, and Chapel Hill Country Club.
    He spent his final years living with his daughter's family in Duplin County and later Cape Carteret, NC where he enjoyed watching his grandsons grow up.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Pattie Lamm Gardner and brother, Lloyd Gardner.
    Tommy is survived by his daughter, Luanne and husband, Curt Sheaffer, of Cape Carteret; a son, Chris, and wife, Elizabeth of Loxahatchie, Florida; two grandsons, Clark and Ethan Sheaffer; brother, Scott Gardner of Durham; and niece, Mary Starr Gardner of Chapel Hill.
    A memorial service honoring his life will be held Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 1:00 pm at University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill.
    The family will receive friends from noon until 1:00 p.m. at the church immediately before the service.
    Tommy's ashes will be interred at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery

    Born in Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Bryan S. and Pauline Elsie Beam Gardner. He was Navy veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church and retired owner of Gardner Used Car Sales.
    In addition to his parents, Mr. Gardner was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Wilson Gardner; second wife, Ruth Sims Gardner; and brothers, Dwan Gardner, Bevan Gardner, Reid Gardner and Torrence Gardner.

    SHELBY Mr. Robert Reid Gardner, 77, of 1673 Fallston Road, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

    Mr. Gardner served in the Army and retired from Bost Bakery after 23 years. He was a member of Charity Baptist Church in Fallston and always looked forward to attending. He was an avid deer hunter and loved prospecting.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Bryan Leandus and Elsie Pauline Gardner; his first wife, Peggy Blanton Gardner; a son, Robert Reid Gardner Jr.; and brothers, Dwan V. Gardner, Tarance Gardner and Bevan L. Gardner.

    He is survived by his wife, Wanda Jean Gardner of the home; two sons, Ricky Gardner and wife, Robyn, and Jimmy Gardner, all of Shelby; a stepdaughter, Beth Martin and husband, Thomas, of Patterson Springs; a stepson, David Haynes of Blacksburg, S.C.; a granddaughter, Amy Gardner; four grandsons, Thomas Lee Martin, Jacob Martin, Richard Haynes and David Haynes Jr.; and three brothers, Norris H.
