    Obituary:
    Thomas Beam Gardner, 76, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, NC.
    Tommy was born on September 20, 1933 in Shelby, NC, the son of Annie Tazwell Lloyd Gardner and Paris Cleveland Gardner. He moved to Chapel Hill at the age of seven and graduated from Chapel Hill High School. Following high school he attended UNC-Chapel Hill where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. After completing his junior year at Carolina, he left to serve his country in the Korean War as a soldier in the United States Army. After fulfilling his service obligation, Tommy operated the Quik Food Mart and Phillips 66 gas station in downtown Chapel Hill. He was also co-owner of Huggins Hardware. He later received his broker's license and became owner of Insurance and Business Associates in Chapel Hill.
    Tommy was very active in civic and political affairs in Chapel Hill serving two terms on the Chapel Hill Town Council. He was a founding member and officer of TaxWatch, founding member of the Downtown Chapel Hill Association, a member of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce and Chapel Hill-Carrboro Merchants Association. He was also active in the N.C. Jaycees at the local and state levels as a charter member of the Chapel Hill Jaycees and also serving as state vice president. Tommy was also a member of the Rooster Club (retired Jaycees), American Legion, and Chapel Hill Country Club.
    He spent his final years living with his daughter's family in Duplin County and later Cape Carteret, NC where he enjoyed watching his grandsons grow up.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Pattie Lamm Gardner and brother, Lloyd Gardner.
    Tommy is survived by his daughter, Luanne and husband, Curt Sheaffer, of Cape Carteret; a son, Chris, and wife, Elizabeth of Loxahatchie, Florida; two grandsons, Clark and Ethan Sheaffer; brother, Scott Gardner of Durham; and niece, Mary Starr Gardner of Chapel Hill.
    A memorial service honoring his life will be held Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 1:00 pm at University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill.
    The family will receive friends from noon until 1:00 p.m. at the church immediately before the service.
    Tommy's ashes will be interred at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery
