- Crestus Howell Moss was a farmer and owned slaves, he was born in Loudoun County, VA. He came from Virginia to North Carolina with his parents before 1805. He later moved from Rutherford County, N.C. to Haywood County, N.C. about 1806/07, and then from Haywood County, N.C. to Macon County, N.C. about 1829 and from Macon County, N.C. to Tusquitee Valley, Clay County, North Carolina about 1835 where he lived on the Old Suttermire Place near his son Howell until he died in 1845. He is buried at the Moss Cemetery in the Tusquitee Valley, Clay County, N. C., at the Moss Baptist Church.
