    Notes:

    Ms. Mary Fowler Padgett (no known relation) remembers "Gil" Fowler as the man who built the stone walls at the Pacolet textile plant. She remember playing around the area where the work was going on and Gil being very good to the kids.

    Mesopotamia Methodist Church, located in Gowdeysville Township, lists a Gilman Fowler recevied by profession on October 2, 1886 (Church Register M.E. Church, South Mesopotamia Sunnyside, SC. The 1892 membership rolls list Gilman with a note "Lost site of".

    The 1900 Spartanburg County, SC census lists Gillman and Ida. Information indicates that Ida was a second wife. The birthdate information listed is different for both Gil and Ida to what is on their gravestones.

    The death certificate lists an F. R. Fowler of Pacolet Mills as the informant. Gillman died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

    Gillman married Ida Petty about 1894. Ida was born on 27 Jul 1876 in South Carolina; died on 26 May 1951 in Pacolet, SC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Ida was crippled by cancer of the hip. Her leg was amputated and hip removed.

    The 1870 census for Union County, SC lists Thomas and Martha in Jonesville Township. It also indicates that Thomas was born in Va. and Martha in SC but Thomas' parents were foreign born.

    The 1880 Union County, SC census shows Thomas (76) and Martha (60) living in Gowdeysville Township (located north of Jonesville off highway 18). The information identifies Martha's birthplace as NC and the children; Gilman (18), Lucy A.(16), W. Jackson (14), Ellen (Etta) (12), Martha F. (10) all born in SC. Three boarders are living with Thomas and Martha in this census; Theodore Smart (22), Adolphis Fowler (23), and ? (21) all male with the same occupation that appears to be "ditcher"

    Thomas and Martha are buried at Brown's Chapel Baptist in Pacolet, SC. The gravesites for Thomas and Martha are in poor shape with Thomas's headstone broken in two and on the ground.

    Notes:

    Published Union County Death notices announced the death of Martha as "a former resident of Pacolet" who died in Whitney and buried at Brown's Chapel. She had probably moved in with her daughter Ella Phillips.

    Hand written notes in the possession of Charlene Allen reference Martha Owens and James and Lola Owens. James and Lola Owens may be the parents of Martha? These notes were taken based on discussions about family that she had had years before.
