    James moved to the Wilson plantation sometime after marrying Tom Wilson's daughter, Sarah. He managed the Hotel at Wilson Springs after the death of Thomas Wilson.

    Sadly his monument is missing. There is a monument at Elizabeth Baptist Church that gives the location of his burial place.

    Notes:

    John Poston was born in Rutherford Co., now Cleveland Co.. He grew up at the old Poston home on Highway 226 near Shelby. As executor of his father's estate he assisted his mother with business relating to the settlement. John made purchases of adjoining land, increasing the acreage he had inherited from his father. Personal records show that he was a meticulous bookeeper, leaving records of guardian accounts, personal business, tax and other receipts. He was a businessman who often made trips to Columbia, S.C. and return with sugar, salt, molasses and cloth to fill his neighbors written requests . After his death, his widow, with the help of her children, managed the farm and even attended to business matters dealing with the Union Army occupation officers.

    Origional papers found by Madge Mauney (Mrs James) Harris, Hwy 226N, Shelb y, NC, include many documents that provide the following information.

    1. Samuel's parents were Jonathan and Mary Poston.
    2. He married Rachael King in Lincoln Co. 12 Jan 1790.
    3. Tax receit paid in 1792 Rutherford Co.
    4. In 1792 he purchased livestock, work tools and household furniture from Adam Stroup; Witness Willis Putnam, John pearson. (Possible family relation - brother Daniel married Hannah Stroup 1788)
    5. Receipts from Francis Alexander for fees to survey land in 1797
    6. Receipt for 4 shillings, 10 Feb 1792 for entering land on waters of Hickory Creek, Rutherford Co, NC. "near mill"? signed by David Miller.
    7. 1799 - several government licenses for operating a distillery for the second district of NC.
    8. Receipt for Government employmentfor road building. $10.25 for two months and $3 and 8 shillings for two weeks. (According to historians, this was a respectable thing to do as many leading citizens were so engaged.)
    9. A document signed by Gov. James Turner appoints Samuel Poston to Capt in the First Batalion of the Second Regiment of the Militia of Rutherford Co. This form states "recognizing special trust and confidence in your Patriotism, Valour , Conduct, and Abilities do by these presents consitute and apoint you Capt ...."
    10. Deed dated 14 Sept 1812, 285 acres sold by Samuel Poston to Joseph Plummer described as in Rutherford Co. on Hickory Creek joining John Wilson and William Magness where said Poston formerly lived.

    Lived in York Co, SC His will, written in 1775 and recorded in York Co. in 1791, mentions land which he owned in "the Province of Virginia," but it is not known if he lived in another state before that. He moved to Rutherford Co., NC then settled in McMinn Co.,TN. Robert was a Baptist Minister. He conducted the marriage of two of his daughters while the family was living in Rutherford Co. NC.

    1763 Authur Oneal's district . Rowan County (now Davidson County area). This was signed by William Massery who was sheriff od Rowan County. (Madge Mauney Harris has found the origional tax receipt.)

    Marriage Bond:
    1790 John Poston Sr and John Poston Jr signed marriage bond for John Poston Jr and Rebecca Baldridge in Lincoln Co.

    Jonathan poston was a chain carrier for surveyer John Frohock in Rowan County noted in a Granville Grant to Henry Sluder dated 28 Aug 1762 on Farmers Creek, a fork of Abbotts Creek.

    From Rowan Co. court Records, 16 Nov. 1769: John Poston to help layout road from Salisbury Road to John Batey's ford on the Catawba River. Todays Beattie's Ford Road goes to this ford. Seems that Jonathan's surveying experience was called on to help with this road.

    In the name of God Amen the Twenty First day of July 1775 ~ I ROBERT PATTERSON of Craven County farmer being very sick and weake in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be unto God, therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do maeke and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say Principally and first of all I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shal receive the same again by the mighty power of God: and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. And first of all I constituet make and ordain my beloved wife SARAH and my beloved sons ROBERT and PETER to be my whole and sole Executors of this my last Will and testament all and singular my lands messuages and tenements whith all household goods dets and moveable affects by them to be executed according to law and for them said Executors to take care and see that all and every one of my beloved family shall have there full share as I shall appoint. Imprimise I give and bequeath to SARAH my dearly beloved wife her full thirds of all my moveable affects and the homestead place till my son WILLIAM comes of age and half afterwards while she lives and her hors and saddle. Item I give and bequeath unto my son THOMAS fifty pounds lawfull mony of South Carolina to be leveed out of my estate and all my cloathes except my fir hat and one gray three year old mare and colt to his son JOHN. I likewise give and bequeath unto my daughter SARAH one cow and calf, and what is between JOSEPH [Black] and me. I likewise give unto my son WILLIAM the homestead place after his mother's decease all only from where the line crosses the road that goes to PETER's old place and straight & cors to the old saw pit below the muddy branch and straight on to the outside line and from that said line down to PETER. I likewise give and bequeath unto my sons PETER and ROBERT each of them an equal part of my land and clams in the province of Virginia. I likewise give and bequeath unto my children all and every one of them is now single with my daughter's ELISEBETH and LYDIA each of them an equal part of the remainder of my movable affects by all and every one of them freely to be possesed and enjoyed: and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other formal testaments wills legacies and bequeaths and Executors by me in any wise before named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.
