Ella and Batson appear in the 1900 Spartanburg County, SC census in Spartanburg Township. Information indicates Ella has had 6 children with 4 living; Lilly, Claude, Clyde, and Hazel. Ella's mother Martha Fowler is living with them.

Ella and Batson appear in the 1910 Spartanburg County, SC census in the Drayton Mills area (house #137). The information indicates that Ella had seven children, four of which were still living. Claude is married (to Carrie), working in a meat market, and living in the same house. Apparently Beulah has already left home.

    Notes:

The 1870 census for Union County, SC lists Thomas and Martha in Jonesville Township. It also indicates that Thomas was born in Va. and Martha in SC but Thomas' parents were foreign born.

The 1880 Union County, SC census shows Thomas (76) and Martha (60) living in Gowdeysville Township (located north of Jonesville off highway 18). The information identifies Martha's birthplace as NC and the children; Gilman (18), Lucy A.(16), W. Jackson (14), Ellen (Etta) (12), Martha F. (10) all born in SC. Three boarders are living with Thomas and Martha in this census; Theodore Smart (22), Adolphis Fowler (23), and ? (21) all male with the same occupation that appears to be "ditcher"

Thomas and Martha are buried at Brown's Chapel Baptist in Pacolet, SC. The gravesites for Thomas and Martha are in poor shape with Thomas's headstone broken in two and on the ground.

Thomas married Martha A. Owens. Martha was born on 11 Oct 1829 in South Carolina; died on 27 Aug 1903 in Whitney, Spartanburg County, SC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Published Union County Death notices announced the death of Martha as "a former resident of Pacolet" who died in Whitney and buried at Brown's Chapel. She had probably moved in with her daughter Ella Phillips.

Hand written notes in the possession of Charlene Allen reference Martha Owens and James and Lola Owens. James and Lola Owens may be the parents of Martha? These notes were taken based on discussions about family that she had had years before.
