    Notes:

William and Sarah raised 16 children on a large farm between Polkville and New House. The home was a large two story house that burned sometime around 1835-1836 while "Hamby" was a baby.

In trying to get all the possessions out of the house, the mattresses were rolled up and thrown out the upstairs window and then later carried away from the house. After the house was engulfed in flame, the family realized Hamby was missing and believed he was lost in the fire. Shortly they heard a baby crying and found Hamby rolled up in one of the mattresses that had been thrown out an upstairs window.

The Davis family farm was handed down to Melena Francis "Fannie" Davis who married Jackson Scoggins and raised three children. Charlotte Lee the oldest married John Jiles Greene and continued on the family farm. Daughter Loulean (Lula) and husband Will Swink moved back in with Charlotte and continued on the farm after Charlotte's death in 1941. The Swinks eventually sold the farm.

"Fannie" Davis was Jackson's second wife. His first wife was Sarah "Sally" Scoggins who had 11 children.

Tombstone in family graveyard has date of death as July 16, 1876
Family history sheets completed by Biddie Ruppe state July 16, 1846
The 1850 Cleveland Co. census does not show William so the family sheets are probably correct. The tombstones were not set until sometime in the 1960 - 1970 timeframe.

William married Sarah "Sally" Womack on 5 Mar 1812 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Sarah (daughter of Anderson Womack and Frances "Fannie" Dobbins) was born on 6 Sep 1793 in Rutherford County, North Carolina; died after 1866 in New House, Cleveland County, NC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Sarah "Sally" Womack was born on 6 Sep 1793 in Rutherford County, North Carolina (daughter of Anderson Womack and Frances "Fannie" Dobbins); died after 1866 in New House, Cleveland County, NC.

    Notes:

Birthdate on the tombstone is 1791. Buried in the Greene-Davis family cemetery located approximately 5 miles from Polkville on Stagecoach Trail Road between Polkville and New House. A family history sheet compiled by Biddie Barnett Ruppe indicates Sally's death as June 27, 1850.

The 1850 Cleveland Co. census shows Sarah as widowed living with the following family members still living with her: Susan (33), Sarah "Sally" (26), Melena Francis (22), Simon D. (16), Abraham H. (15), William A Philbeck (10), and Abram Womack (45) apparently her brother a blacksmith. William Philbeck is apparently the son of Susan and John Philbeck.

The 1860 Cleveland Co. census shows Sarah as an invalid living in the same house as her daughter Sarah P. (36) another daughter Phoebe C. McKinney (32), Mary J. Davis (7), William A. Philbeck (19), William P. Davis (11), William A. Davis (10), and Cela S. Davis (8).

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Frances Scoggin was born on 22 Aug 1725 in Bristol, Washington, Virginia (son of Richard (Rich) Scogin and Mary); died in 1809 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Frances apparently died in his fifties. He is listed in the 1800 Rutherford Co. Census as being 45+ with a wife also 45+ and 7 children (5 male, 2 Female).
This would put 3 males and 1 female born between 1774 and 1784, 1 male and 1 female born between 1784 and 1790, and 1 male born between 1790 and 1800. An entry in the Rutherford Co. Book of Wills (Book B) on Page 244 dated 24 October 1809 documents an agreement on the dispositioning of Frances's land to Lemuel, Burgas, Jesse, Richard, Elizabeth, and Jeremiah Scoggin and Sally Worthburn. It appears these are the seven children listed in the 1800 census, I believe Jeremiah is the oldest since he is taking custody of the two youngest (Jesse and Richard) although one of the boys would appear to be old enough to go on his own but there may have been a medical circunstance. Also Jeremiah received no land from the disposition, I believe implying that he probably was left the homeplace and the two boys were to remain there. Elizabeth is probably the youngest girl who would be between 19 and 25 in 1809. This is based on the fact that Burgas is identified as taking the lot for her. Sally Worthburn is probably the oldest daughter and had been married to a Worthburn. A Larkin Dycus is mentioned as taking two lots for himself and Sally but no indications as to who he is. He also served as bondsman for the marriage of Ezekiel to Rebecah Taylor in Jan. 1807. (Could Jemima been a Dycus?)

The IGI of the LDS database lists Ezekiel Scoggins as a son of Frances Scoggin. I believe this is possibly Jeremiah (Ezekial). Ezekial Scoggins is mentioned in Joshua Taylor's will Book D page 122 as married to Rebecca Taylor with 4 children. The IGI dates listed as abt do not match up with the census data provided for Frances and are off by a significant number of years. It also is not logical considering the document posted in the will book for Frances on 24 Oct 1809. Richard and Jesse would have been in their 50s by then if you use the IGI dates.

Frances married Jemima in 1748 in Prince George Co, Virginia. was born in 1730 in Rutherford County, North Carolina; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Jemima was born in 1730 in Rutherford County, North Carolina; and died.
    Children:
    1. Lemuel Scoggin was born about 1774; and died.
    2. Elizabeth Scoggin was born about 1776; and died.
    3. Ezekial (Jeremiah) Scoggin was born about 1778; and died.
    4. 4. Burgas (Bird) Scoggin, Sr. was born about 1784; and died.
    5. Sally Scoggin was born about 1785; and died.
    6. Richard Scoggin was born about 1790; and died.
    7. Jesse Scoggin was born about 1795; and died.

  3. 12.  Phillip Davis was born in 1762 in North Carolina; died on 19 Jan 1829 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

The birthdate and place of Phillip Davis is not currently known although itis believed to be Brunswick County, Va. In 1790 he was a resident of Union county, SC. By 1800 he and his wife Nancy had moved to Rutherford County. He is probably the younger brother of Simon Davis and either followed him or the family, as a whole, moved to Union Co., SC just prior to the Revolutionary War. No records are available that indicate Phillip served in the War.

The family information on the group sheet is primarily based on a will recorded in the July 1830 court of Rutherford Co. taken from excerpts of wills and Miscellaneous Records 1783 -1868 by James E. Wooley and Vivian Wooley. I believe it to be this Phillip Davis based on the 1800 census listing where only one Phillip Davis shows up (w 1 son and three dau.), the 1820 census shows three Phillips; one should be Phillip, Jr. and the other would be the son of William F. Davis and grandson of this Phillip.

The date given for Phillip's death is the date of the will. The will is located in the NC State Archives; Farris is probably James Farris. The executors of the will are Jacob Davis, Phillip Watkins, Thos. Logan, and William Davis. Witnesses are; James B. Watkins, Wm. Watkins, and John Simmons.

Phillip married Nancy. was born in 1766 in North Carolina; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    11. Phillip Davis and died.
    12. 6. William Fernilson Davis was born on 19 Mar 1788 in Union County, South Carolina; died on 16 Jul 1846 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

  5. 14.  Anderson Womack was born on 19 Oct 1765 in Halifax County, Virginia (son of Thomas A. Womack and Louvisa Rice); died on 30 Sep 1848 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Ancestral Files from the LDS Family history center spells the last name Wormack, and Fannie's tombstone is spelled the same. The World Family Tree says Anderson is buried in Columbia, SC. This is probably one of the descendant Andersons.

Records of William Coppedge indicate that Anderson's grave was found on his original land grant in Rutherford Co. with inscription, "In memory of Anderson Womack who died September 30, 1848. Aged 82 years, 11 months, 11 days. "

Anderson married Frances "Fannie" Dobbins about 1785 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Frances (daughter of William Dobbins and Susanna Collins) was born about 1772 in York, South Carolina; died about 1863 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 15.  Frances "Fannie" Dobbins was born about 1772 in York, South Carolina (daughter of William Dobbins and Susanna Collins); died about 1863 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Frances is the sister of Rev. Drury Dobbins (Drury Dobbins Baptist Church). She is living with son Willis in the 1860 Rutherford County census and with Levi Burns in the 1870 Rutherford County census.

    Children:
    1. Sidney Womack was born about 1790 in Rutherford County, North Carolina; and died.
