From Clevelamd Gardner's notes: Thomas Gardner like many others in Cleveland County enlisted in the Confererate Army at the beginning of the Civil War. He was wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg and his injury was serious enough that he had to return home for a time to recover. Once strong again he returned to his company. He was seen to fall of a wound at the battle at Gettysburg. He was never seen or heard from since. After first considered wounded and missing he was later declared killed in action. He was probably burried in a mass grave there.

Promoted to Sgt 1 Aug 1862. Present and accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 Sep 1862. Returned home to recover from his wounds. Returned to service Jan-Feb 1863. Missing and probably killed at Gettysburg. Mary, his widow, applied for pension 27 Jun 1885.

Thomas married Mary Jane Williams on 20 Mar 1855. Mary (daughter of William (Buck) Williams and Mary (Polly) Wellmon) was born on 3 Jan 1829 in Cleveland County, North Carolina; died on 18 Dec 1924 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In 1870 Mary Jane is living with her mother along with her brother Jacob and his family. Her brother is incorrectly listed in the census as a female.

From Clevelamd Gardner's notes: William Gardner and wife settled on Vaughn's Creek lying southeast and adjoining that of his father. Here the young Gardner aquired a large plantation lying on the east side of First Broad River and extending down the river below Double Shoals. This included the later home place of Dick and Schenck Spangler. His youngest daughter Nancy Gardner Crowder and her husband later lived here. This property was later owned by by Dick Spangler. During September 1847 William Gardner and all his family were ill with typhoid fever. William died on Sunday the 12th and his daughter Jane died the following Sunday. He was 46 and Jane was 17. They were buried next to each other on this farm.

Cemetery:
This cemetery can be reached from Lawndale, NC by going east on NC 182 until you are about out of Lawndale and then making a right turn onto Ball Park Road. Go out Ball Park Rd. about a mile until you start to go into a curve to the left and there you turn right onto Power House Road. Go about two tenths of a mile out this road and find a paved drive to the right. This drive has a gate that might or might not be closed. The cemetery is at the top oh the little hill on the right side of the road, There is junk all over the cemetery and several pretty large trees. There is evidence of several other graves but only two that can be read. This is one of those really sad cemeteries.

William married Rebecca Beam on 4 Sep 1827. Rebecca (daughter of Martin Beam, Sr. and Elizabeth Alexander) was born in 1806; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

From Clevelamd Gardner's notes: Thomas and Olive Gardner married and settled on the east side of the First Broad River and Magness Creek about 300 yards northeast of the John Harrelson home place and the Ham Williams homestead. This was in the part of Rutherford County that became Cleveland Co. in 1841. The old Lincolnton - Rutherford Stagecoach route ran through his land and crossed First Broad River on his land at a place called Gardner's Ford just below Lawndale. Thomas' youngest son, six grandsons and six great grandsons served in the Civil War. His son, four grandsons and two great grandsons were killed or died from war causes. One great grandson was MIA. There is a family tradition that Thomas may have been a preacher as he was called Elder Gardner. Thomas Gardner and his wife are buried in the Family cemetery on their plantation situated a quarter mile east of the home of the late Ralph Hord.

Thomas purchased at aucton a Negro woman who was brought from Virginia about the year of 1800. This woman had a child named Flora. Albert Hord of Shelby, a teacher and minister, is a half brother as they had the same father. Flora was left to Thomas' wife and thence to her daughters. Flora had four children: Jay Gardner Emma Gardner who married Bill Schenck son of Dick Schenck - a slave of Major Schenck's father. From Clevelamd Gardner's notes: Olivine lived on the Catawba River before her marriage to Thomas. Upon the death of her husband, Olivine bought a farm lying between New Bethel Baptist Church and the Philidelphia Negro Church which joined the plantation of Colonel Grigg on the east. Here she and her two daughters resided until their deaths. Ollie was a midwife and it is said that this was the means she used to procure the money to purchase her new home and farm. ___________________________________________________________________ An original bill of sale has been located amoung papers of John Poston. This document is dated 31 May 1821. The bill of sale is for: one still ten hogsheads one singlein tub one doublin Cagg one singlein Cagg one Can flakstone It does not mention the price. The document is signed by Martin Gardner and Olive Gardner made her mark. This would indicate that Thomas Gardner has already died by this date. See notes under her daughter Elizabeth Gardner.

Born In Maryland in 1763, moved with his mother to Virginia when a young boy; From there he migrated south with his parents at the end of the revolution. He stopped in that portion of Rutherford County that is now Cleveland and hired himself to a farmer. His parents moved on to Alabama. He served three months as a private in Capt. Elias Langhorn's company in Col Lock's Regiment. He was a guard at Salsbury. He died in 1857 at his home in Cleveland County. He resided about one mile west of Fallston and owned some 1600 acres of land between Fallston and Beam's Mill.

The name Wellmon has been spelled several different ways, to-wit: Wilburn, Welburn, Wellons and Wellman. However the family settling in Lincoln and Cleveland Counties of this state have always spelled their name "Wellmon". The given name William has always been a fovorite name in the Wellmon family, and in every generation of the Wellmon family we find the name William.
WILLIAM WELLMON THE FIRST: Written records now in the possession of Catharine (Cary) Wellmon Williams, who resides on the Shelby-Morganton Road at Beams Mill, and who is the only living child of William Wellmon, the first, show that William Wellmon the first was born March 12th, 1763, and died September 5th, 1857. Family records says that he was born in the State of Maryland, and that his Mother's name was Katty Wellmon. While he was a young boy his mother married George Riley in Maryland and moved to Virginia, where they resided until young William Wellmon was probably 16 years old. The entire family then continued their march Southward, young Wellmon stopping and hiring to a farmer in Lincoln County, now Cleveland County, and his mother and step father going on to the State of Alabama. It is said that young Wellmon and his mother corresponded with each other for many years, or until the death of his mother.
WORKED AS HIRED HAND: It is said that William Wellmon the first on coming to North Carolina hired to a farmer who resided about one-half mile South of the present site of Waco (formally known as Ramsey's crossing). The name of the farmer is unknown. However, the exact location is pointed out at this date as being the farm later owned by Laws Botts, and later occupied by Morgan Poole.
FIRST MARRIAGE: How long this young Wellmon worked as a hired hand prior to his marriage is not known, nor is the date of his marriage known. It is very possible that immediately after his marriage with miss Moss that he either rented or purchased a farm upon which he settled and remained the remainder of his long life. This farm lies on the West side of the Shelby-Morganton Road, About one-half miles Southwest of the present site of Fallston, formally Rutherford County, now Cleveland County. It is said that he was a shrewd trader, also that he was a man of fine judgement, and was a hard worker. And by the use of these he accumulated considerable property and became one of the leading citizens of his time. He owned some 1600 acres of fine farm land, which includes the present site of the town of Fallston, and extending and lying between Fallston and Beams Mill and Double Shoals. He also owned a number of Negro slaves some who were Jack Wellmon. He and two wives and a number of his children and relatives, were buried in the family grave yard on the Wellmon old homestead and in sight of the home.
