    Thomas Beam Gardner, 76, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, NC.
    Tommy was born on September 20, 1933 in Shelby, NC, the son of Annie Tazwell Lloyd Gardner and Paris Cleveland Gardner. He moved to Chapel Hill at the age of seven and graduated from Chapel Hill High School. Following high school he attended UNC-Chapel Hill where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. After completing his junior year at Carolina, he left to serve his country in the Korean War as a soldier in the United States Army. After fulfilling his service obligation, Tommy operated the Quik Food Mart and Phillips 66 gas station in downtown Chapel Hill. He was also co-owner of Huggins Hardware. He later received his broker's license and became owner of Insurance and Business Associates in Chapel Hill.
    Tommy was very active in civic and political affairs in Chapel Hill serving two terms on the Chapel Hill Town Council. He was a founding member and officer of TaxWatch, founding member of the Downtown Chapel Hill Association, a member of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce and Chapel Hill-Carrboro Merchants Association. He was also active in the N.C. Jaycees at the local and state levels as a charter member of the Chapel Hill Jaycees and also serving as state vice president. Tommy was also a member of the Rooster Club (retired Jaycees), American Legion, and Chapel Hill Country Club.
    He spent his final years living with his daughter's family in Duplin County and later Cape Carteret, NC where he enjoyed watching his grandsons grow up.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Pattie Lamm Gardner and brother, Lloyd Gardner.
    Tommy is survived by his daughter, Luanne and husband, Curt Sheaffer, of Cape Carteret; a son, Chris, and wife, Elizabeth of Loxahatchie, Florida; two grandsons, Clark and Ethan Sheaffer; brother, Scott Gardner of Durham; and niece, Mary Starr Gardner of Chapel Hill.
    A memorial service honoring his life will be held Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 1:00 pm at University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill.
    The family will receive friends from noon until 1:00 p.m. at the church immediately before the service.
    Tommy's ashes will be interred at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery

    Annie Gardner Taught Thousands to Play Piano

    Annie Tazwell 'Tazzie" Lloyd Gardner of Chapel Hill and formally of Shelby, who began teaching piano in 1929 and taught thousands of students for over 60 years, died September 2, 1986. She was 90.
    In the 1920's and 1930's, Mrs. Gardner taught piano in Shelby, both at her home and at school during recess and after class. When the family moved to Chapel Hill in 1939, she began teaching piano in the schools there, this time as an employee, as well as in her home.
    "She loved young people and enjoyed the thrill of music," said her son Lloyd Gardner. "She taught so many thousands of people."
    Mrs. Gardner was also an active Democrat, campaigning for two Governors -O. Max Gardner in 1928 and Clyde R. Hoey in 1936, both from Cleveland County.
    "She knocked on doors, canvassed mills, handed out literature, all of it," said her son Scott Gardner. "They furnished her, for her campaigning, a full-time chauffer," he said. "both said they could cut their political staff in half if they had more people like my mother." Scott Gardner said his mother and his father, the late P. Cleveland Gardner, a former county solicitor and county historian in Cleveland County, were very upset about the sweatshops.
    Many mill employed young children, he said, who were sweeping floors and doing other tasks around the mills. "She was very active in trying to put an end to these people being in economic slavery." He said.
    She attended the Southern Conservatory of Music in Raleigh and then attended Meridith College in Raleigh.
    She was a native of Chapel Hill. She was a member of University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill.
    Her funeral is 11 A.M. Friday at Walker Funeral Home.
    Survivors are her sons, Lloyd Gardner, Scott Gardner, Tommy Gardner, all of Chapel Hill; Sister Mrs. Stella Long of Santa Anna, California.?b?

    From Clevelamd Gardner's notes: Thomas Gardner like many others in Cleveland County enlisted in the Confererate Army at the beginning of the Civil War. He was wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg and his injury was serious enough that he had to return home for a time to recover. Once strong again he returned to his company. He was seen to fall of a wound at the battle at Gettysburg. He was never seen or heard from since. After first considered wounded and missing he was later declared killed in action. He was probably burried in a mass grave there.

    Promoted to Sgt 1 Aug 1862. Present and accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 Sep 1862. Returned home to recover from his wounds. Returned to service Jan-Feb 1863. Missing and probably killed at Gettysburg. Mary, his widow, applied for pension 27 Jun 1885.

    From P. Cleveland Gardner's notes: He bought a farm just South of his father's homestead upon which he and his wife settled and reared a large family. Some years later he erected a large two story house just West of where he first settled, which residence is occupied by his son and known as the Wellmon Homestead. His father died will still in the prime of life and left a large family, and he administered upon the estate of his father and purchased the interest of the several heirs and took care of his mother who lived to of old age. He is buried in the family plot with his father.

    Military Service:
    William served in the military in 56th Regiment NC Infantry CO F The 56th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in July 1862, at Camp Magnum, near Raleigh, NC. Its members were recruited in the counties of Camden, Cumberland, Pasquotank, Northampton, Orange, Cleveland, Alexander, Rutherford, and Mechlenburg. It fought at Gum Swamp, Plymouth, and Drewry"s Bluff, endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches south of the James River, and saw action around Appomattox. The regiment had 149 men captured at Gum Swamp, lost 4 killed and 84 wounded at Plymouth, and reported 90 causualties at Ware Bottom Church. Many were disabled at Sayler's Creek, and only 9 Officers and 62 men surrendered with the army of Northern Virginia.
