Notes:

Prior to WWI Lyle was employed by a railroad company running through North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. He served in the U S Marine Corp 1918-1919. Following his military service he became employed by a construction company whose major job was the designing and building of golf courses. He first worked an apprenticeship on a job in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1921 he was assigned to Shelby N.C. where he was in charge of building shelby's first golf course at Cleveland Springs. There he met Lois Poston and they married two years later. He stayed at Cleveland Springs as golf pro for four years. Later he was golf pro at Spartanburg Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C. While there he converted the sand greens to grass and did some remodeling. There he was known for having the best clay tennis courts in the south. He then moved to Lake Lure, N.C. where he completed a golf course that had been laid out some years earlier. During those three years he designed and built golf courses at Black Mountain and Forest City, N.C. He remained in Forest City as Pro until the begining of WWII when he went into defense work with the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company in Wilmington, N.C. Following WWII he designed and built a golf course at Whiteville, N.C. His last position was as golf pro and manager of the Lake City, Fl. Country Club. There he converted the sand greens to grass and remodeled some of the holes. During that time he took three months and went to Rutherfordton, N.C. and converted their courses from sand to grass greens. Besides being good at designing and building courses he was an excellent golfer and an even better instructor. He played only a little tournament golf because he would become extremely nervous and felt it was not worth it because he did not show his potential in tournament play.

William married Lois Virginia Poston on 5 Jan 1923 in Gaffney, Cherokee County, SC. Lois (daughter of James Osburne Poston and Ellen Margaret Kerr) was born on 10 Mar 1896 in Cleveland County, North Carolina; died on 22 Sep 1973 in Hartwell, GA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Pallbearers were Messers. Clyde, McBride, Paul and Bryan Poston, Julius Mull and Porter Champion. Flower girls were close friends of the family. Attendants came from as far away as Jacksonville, Fl.

James married Ellen Margaret Kerr on 1 Oct 1884 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Ellen (daughter of John William Kerr and Nancy Cornelia Erwin) was born on 25 Nov 1864 in Gaffney, Cherokee County, SC; died on 22 Feb 1940 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

James moved to the Wilson plantation sometime after marrying Tom Wilson's daughter, Sarah. He managed the Hotel at Wilson Springs after the death of Thomas Wilson.

Sadly his monument is missing. There is a monument at Elizabeth Baptist Church that gives the location of his burial place.

James married Sarah Wilson on 4 Oct 1847. Sarah (daughter of Thomas Wilson and Elizabeth Love) was born on 18 Oct 1823 in Cleveland County, North Carolina; died on 22 Jun 1899. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

John was an Elder of the Presbyterian Church. His obituary states that he was "one of Shelby's oldest and most esteemed citizens."

John married Nancy Cornelia Erwin in 1851. Nancy (daughter of Issac Erwin and Margaret Gingles, daughter of Absalom Michael McAbee and Mahulda "Hulda" Ann Weaver) was born on 5 Jul 1827 in Lincoln County, NC; died on 11 Aug 1911 in Shelby, Cleveland County, North Carolina; was buried in Sunset Cemetery, Shelby, Cleveland County, North Carolina.
